OVERVIEW:

The Associate Curator for Arts and Humanities at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis assists with the development, management, research, accessions, utilization and presentation of the Museum’s cultural collections. The incumbent works with the Lead Curator and the Collections department team to curate and oversee the rotation, utilization and care of artifacts incorporated into the Museum exhibitions, kiosks, programs and experiences.

REPORTS TO: Lead Curator, Arts and Humanities

Essential Responsibilities

  • Works to maximize the use and visibility of the collection through provision of ideas, artifacts and information in various collaborative efforts and ventures. Works with staff members to provide objects and relevant documentation in a timely manner.
  • Assists with accessioning and deaccessioning. At the direction of the Lead Curator, completes processing of artifacts into the museum’s permanent collection, works with Collections Management staff to catalogue, store, retrieve, and record documentation into collections management computer database. Provides deaccessioning support through selection, documentation and appropriate disposition of objects.
  • Assists with identifying, researching, seeking and acquiring appropriate iconic artifacts and loans for the museum.
  • Works closely with Lead Curator, Curator, Collections Management and Conservation staff to assure and recommend collections care, safety, and documentation and to develop and implement plans for long-term solutions.
  • Works with internal colleagues to plan, prepare, install and de-install object-based exhibits.
  • At the direction of the Lead Curator, provides content expertise for project/program planning teams to accurately and appropriately utilize artifacts via temporary, permanent and traveling exhibits, gallery programs, and virtual use of the collection.
  • Facilitates access to the collection and utilization of the collection to advance the mission, vision and strategic plan achievement for the museum.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in history, archaeology, anthropology, social studies education, art history, or related field.
  • One (1) year of experience curating museum artifact collections in a museum or cultural institution.
  • Proven organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in artifact handling, cataloging, and condition reporting.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; experience in public presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member within a fast-paced environment that values diversity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated research skills for the development of text for exhibits, catalogues, publications, and programs, as well as for documentation and the identification of potential acquisitions preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills, including word processing and database programs.
  • Proven experience in working productively and creatively in an educationally oriented museum focused on children and families.

  • Requires the ability to visually identify individuals, write and read reports, and conduct face-to-face conversations.
  • Requires the ability to communicate clearly with others in-person, virtually, and telephonically.
  • Requires the ability to use keyboards, install exhibits, and manipulate or handle artifacts and documents.
  • Requires the ability to negotiate inside the museum physical plant and campus.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, climb, kneel, and bend to reach artifacts and install exhibits. Must be able to sit for long periods of time and tolerate dust in the work environment.
